PRINCE CHARMING

Stopping at a convenience store I frequent for gas and coffee,
I arrive at the register to pay.
The guy behind the counter sees me here several times a week.
“Hey, you married?”
“Ah, no.”
“You have boyfriend?”
“Ah, no.”
“What, you not like men? You lesbian?”
“Ah, no.”
“Then you go on date with me. I’m prince in Pakistan, you date me.”
“Ah, no…. thank you.”
“Why not? You don’t have man. Why you not date me?”
“No, thank you. Gotta go.”
So much for frequenting the most convenient store,
My routine is now screwed up.
You suck prince charming.

THE PONY

Driving in the early morning to a job I don’t like,
Each day I see the pony
Long and shaggy coat, brown and tan and dirty coat
Through each season he stands
In a square fenced in coral by the road
A leaning shed his only shelter
Head hanging each morning, standing alone
Each time, every morning, I pass, I wonder
All through the day, I wonder
Wonder about the pony’s life
Was he ever happy? Did a child once ride upon his back?
Did he at some time sport a shining saddle and a bridle with a star?
Was he a favored attraction at the fair, many squealing children waiting to ride him?
Does anyone love him now? Stroke him? Brush him? Murmur their affection to him?
Does anyone now offer a sweet, a crisp carrot, a kiss on the silky spot of his nose?
Or sadder still, was he always just standing in his paddock wondering all these things to himself?
While similarly I wonder, several miles away
Sitting at a desk, in a chair, head hanging, alone, hoping for something better

MORNING GRASS

Dew on the morning grass, morning grass, dew, dew, grass, morning grass.
Dew on the morning grass, morning grass, morning dew.
Do, do step on the grass, morning grass,
Bare foot on the grass, wet and cold, crisp blades of grass between my toes,
Between my toes, blades of grass between my toes, morning dew on the grass between my toes.
Foot up, moving up, over grass, plunging into grass, morning grass with the dew on my toes.
Crisp and green, morning dew, no longer dew on the grass where my foot was a
Moment on the grass the morning grass, no dew on the grass crisp and green morning grass no longer dew on the grass in the shape of my foot.
Do, do take another step onto the grass with the dew cold and crisp and green, morning grass, morning grass, crisp and green, cold and wet morning grass.
